The Edo House of Assembly on Monday condemned the gruesome murder of four policemen in Afuze, Owan East Local Government Area of the state. The fou policemen muedered are: Mr Ojo Kosemani (DPO), Insp. Isaac Sadoh, Sgt Justina Aghomon and Glory David. A former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Edo, Mr Aniedi Ikoiwak, has called for a reduction of the number of political parties in the country. Ikoiwak told NAN on Monday that there should be a legislative amendment of the Electoral Act pruning the number of political parties to two or five. He said a situation where over 100 political parties were registered for an election when only two or three of such parties had massive followers was cumbersome and a waste of resources. “The ballot papers in the just concluded general elections were littered with names of parties that could best be described as village associations with no national coverage as stipulated by law,” he said. Ikoiwak said that some voters found it difficult to locate the logos of their preferred parties during the elections. Former Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof. Bem Angwe, was on Saturday shot by some yet to be identified gunmen in Gboko town, Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State. The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, on Friday apologised to Nigerians over the suspension of the Iju-Abeokuta free train ride during the 2019 general elections. Amaechi tendered the apology during the monthly rail inspection of the Lagos-Ibadan modernisation project in Ibadan, NAN reports. The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal has granted President Muhammadu Buhari and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), access to the materials used for the conduct of the 2019 election. The Justice Abdu Aboki-led tribunal, gave the go-ahead on Thursday following the applications filed by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Wole Olanipekun, and other prominent lawyers. In their separate ex parte applications for the order of inspection, Buhari and the APC pleaded that they be given access to the materials used by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in conducting the February 23 presidential poll. They explained that this would enable them to defend themselves in any petition which the runner-up in the poll, Atiku Abubakar, and his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), planned to file. The police in Ogun state have arrested 25-year-old Seyi Ajiboye, pictured above, for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl who is suffering down syndrome. A statement issued by the state police command spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi, says the victim was returing from church when the suspect lured her into his room and defiled her. The police in Kano state have arrested the state deputy governor, Nasir Gawuna and the commissioner in charge of Local government and chieftaincy affairs, Sule Garo, for disrupting proceedings at the Kano State collation centre of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The Katsina State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a policeman and abduction of three Independent National Elelectoral Commidsion, INEC, adhoc staff during the governorship and state assembly elections held in the state on Saturday. The police also announced the killing of a civil defence officer in separate attack while on election duty.
