Why We Flogged Protesting Women In Delta" — Army Unit Commander

THE Nigerian Army Unit Commander stationed at Ovre-Eku community, Ethiope East Local Government Area, Delta State, Lt. E. D. Oworobo, has told a police source that the reason he ordered his men to flog the women who had embarked on a peaceful protest over a disputed land claimed by PRESCO Oil Company, was because they attempted to disarm his men. Oworobo and his men of the 4th Brigade Command, Benin-City, Edo State, had last Wednesday, flogged and kicked hundreds of women protesting at Ovre-Eku (Iwevbo) community over a land which had been in dispute for years between Edo and Delta states. The source who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Oworobo had contacted the District Officer, DO, of Eku Police station, Mr. Andrew Efejedia, in an attempt to exonerate himself and his men of any wrong doing in the incident, where he claimed that he had no option than to order his men to use minimal force to disperse the protesters who had tried to disarm his men. According to the source,...

Image
Legal luminaries have said that the resolutions passed by the Senate last week, reducing the cost of UTME form from N5,650 to N2,500 and the extension of results validity to three years are not binding on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB. Itse Sagay Recall that the Senate had, on November 17, 2015, adopted a resolution and directed its Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund to inquire into circumstances surrounding the new JAMB policy, including allegations of favouritism as well as review of JAMB admission.  In that light, the Senate reacted to the Chairman, Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, Senator Binta Masi Garba’s submission and consideration on JAMB admission policies, by fixing N2,500 as fee payable to JAMB. Similarly, it has also extended the validity of JAMB results from one to three years while institution and course forms and all other incidental activities around the examination should be free. The new JAMB poli...

Tight Security Around CCT Chairman, Umar Ahead Of Saraki’s Trial Tomorrow

The security around the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, Justice Danladi Umar has been strengthened ahead of tomorrow’s trial of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki. More undercover security agents have been drafted to Umar’s residence and office and the security privilege is said to have been extended to his immediate family, The Nation reports. The report quoted a source as saying that the heavy security around Umar is targeted at wading off undue pressure and allowing the CCT Chairman to carry out his duties without undue influence. Speaking with the newspaper, a source said, “There is now an enhanced security around the CCT chairman and his family. “More plain-cloth agents have been drafted to his residence and office. His movement is now being well policed. “I think this is due to the sensitive nature of the assignment. It is, however, not unusual because some judges who presided over ‘sensitive Election Petitions Tribunals...

Afeez Hanafi A suspected thief, Babatunde Ibrahim, who allegedly specialises in stealing phones, says he derives pleasure in the act. The 28-year-old suspect told the police that he had been stealing since his childhood, confessing that he had stolen over 100 phones. PUNCH Metro learnt that Ibrahim was arrested on Sunday by operatives of Rapid Response Squad, Lagos State Police Command, at the Ikeja Along end of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway while he was returning from a burglary in the Ilupeju area of the state. The suspect told the police that he had entered the building through the balcony door which was left ajar, and stole three phones and other valuables. Ibrahim said he usually sold the stolen items to Sanni Azeez and Hakeem Kamoru, adding that his targets were mainly motorists trapped in gridlock. He said, “The act of stealing has become part of me. I am a specialist in burgling people’s houses. I used to gain entrance into any house by breaking the door or c...

Image
ABUJA — The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi, said yesterday, that the driver of late Minister of State for Labour, Mr. James Ocholi, would be prosecuted for over-speeding, following the ghastly road crash that claimed the lives of the minister, his wife and son last Sunday. The late minister, Chief James Ocholi (left) and wife He also stated that Ocholi’s driver had no drivers licence as his name was not found on the data base of FRSC. Oyeyemi, who disclosed these while presenting the accident’s Road Traffic Crash Investigation Interim Report to the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, recommended periodic retraining for convoy drivers, adding that late Ocholi and his family members were not on seat belt during the accident. Overspeeding He said: “Information gathered revealed that the driver of the crashed vehicle was actually moving at excess of the stipulated speed when he had a...

"$1m Not Found In Badeh’s House" - Lawyer

Image
A lawyer to the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh (retd.), Samuel O. Zibri (SAN), has faulted a report that $1m was found in the former CDS’s house. The lawyer, in a statement in Abuja, said, “The publication is not only malicious but wicked. It is totally false and smacks of media campaign of calumny against the person of Air Marshal Alex Badeh, (retd,). “The 10-count charge against our client along with the proof of evidence in the Federal High Court are public documents and can be accessed by the general public. “There is no such allegation and we challenge the faceless Economic Financial Crimes Commission official to substantiate his claim. The trial has commenced and our client, as a law-abiding citizen, will defend himself in accordance with the law.”

Saudi Arabia Seeks $6- $8 Billion Loan To Shore Up State Coffers

Afterall, Nigeria is not alone in this. Saudi Arabia is seeking a bank loan of between $6 billion and $8 billion, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters, in what would be the first significant foreign borrowing by the kingdom's government for over a decade. Riyadh has asked lenders to submit proposals to extend it a five-year U.S. dollar loan of that size, with an option to increase it, the sources said, to help plug a record budget deficit caused by low oil prices. The sources declined to be named because the matter is not public. Calls to the Saudi finance ministry and central bank seeking comment on Wednesday were not answered. Last week, Reuters reported that Saudi Arabia had asked banks to discuss the idea of an international loan, but details such as the size and lifespan were not specified. The kingdom's budget deficit reached nearly $100 billion last year. The government is currently bridging the gap by drawing down its massive store of foreign assets an...

Blackout: Electricity Generation Sinks To 1,580MW

The highly pronounced power failures across the country in the past few days may worsen following a partial system collapse that occurred on Tuesday, and the continuous drop in electricity generation due to what the government says is the vandalism of pipelines that supply gas to the power plants. As a result, power generation dropped to 1,580.6 megawatts on Wednesday. Data from the Nigeria Electricity System Operator as well as information from senior officials of the different electricity distribution companies confirmed that power generation plummeted massively on Tuesday and Wednesday. The officials noted that this resulted in the reduction of the electricity load allocated to the Discos, stressing that this was why many parts of the country had been recording blackouts in the past few days. It was learnt that the partial system collapse that occurred on Tuesday happened at the Shiroro Power Plant and dragged down electricity generation to as low as 1,233.4MW from a peak of 3,...

48 years After, Yakubu Gowon Confirms Paternity Of US-Returnee Son, Musa

Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon(retd.) has confirmed fathering a love child with the late public relations expert, Princess Edith Ike Okongwu. This confirmation brings to an end the 48-year-old paternity dispute over Musa Gowon who returned to Nigeria in 2016, after about 23 years in a United States prison.Yakubu Gowon said he is Musa's father following the report of a conclusive DNA test. In her lifetime, Princess Okongwu had dragged Gowon to court and the paternity dispute was the subject of a legal action that reached the Supreme Court in Nigeria, which Okongwu won. The execution of the judgment was however thwarted by the arrest of Musa by United States law enforcement officials in Dallas on the charge of importing heroin into the country. The young Musa was sentenced to 27 years in prison and was only released in November 2016 on compassionate ground and good behaviour. While in custody, Musa Gowon in 2003 lost his mother, a leading socialite in Nigeria who was also ...

Boko Haram Now Disguise As Herdsmen In Benue, Taraba - Senate

Agatu Killings: Senate blames Boko Haram, not Fulani herdsmen The Nigerian Senate, on Wednesday, said crimes of mass murder across Nigerian communities were committed by “overpowered” Boko Haram insurgents, not Fulani herdsmen. This was part of the Senate’s resolutions that followed a motion by Emmanuel Bwacha (PDP-Taraba State) on “the need to urgently flush out Boko Haram insurgents reassembling in Taraba State”. “The Senate is aware that that Nigerian Army has recorded tremendous success in the war against insurgents in the States of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa. “There is a change of tactics by insurgents who now parade as herdsmen to make it difficult for the public to identify them,” Mr. Bwacha said. He said many communities in his Taraba South constituency had been deserted, following attacks by Boko Haram insurgents “masquerading as Fulani herdsmen”. Fulani herdsmen have been accused of mass murder and destruction of...

There Are No Political Killings In Rivers, Only Cult Clashes" – Wike

Image
Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state has dismissed the allegations that recent killings in the oil-rich state have been politically motivated and targeted at members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, alone. Wike pointed out that the killings in the state are clashes of rival cult gangs fighting for supremacy, noting that, it has nothing to do with politics ahead of the March 19 rerun election. Wike made this declaration while swearing in the Justice Iyayi Lamikanra as the substantive Chief Judge of the state. “When politicians perceive a threat and they want to act, they will not say let’s eliminate him. If that happens, you will not ask if it was a politically motivated killing, you will know it is a political killing. “Not when cultists die from a feud, then some people will start shouting that they are killing their party members. “Have you asked yourself why no known politician has been killed or even a known person? Why? Does it not tell you something? When you shed othe...

Nigeria: The Economic Upside By Kemi Adeosun

Nigerians voted for change and to attain that change there is a need to do things differently, in the recognition that doing what we have always done will only result in more of the same. That change has started with the vital offensive against corruption, which has had a huge and adverse effect on our economy. Much of the debilitating underinvestment in our infrastructure that has handicapped our economic growth, has arisen because funds were diverted to enrich a few at the expense of the wider populace. At the lower levels, the waste, inefficiency and culture of non-performance have, like a financial cancer, eaten away at our core institutions. We are already beginning to see change. The slide towards self-destruction has slowed down but we must now work collectively to ensure that we exploit the upside from our situation. Globally the downturn has hit all nations, rich and poor alike. The manner in which governments have intervened to protect their economies have been diverse and ...

Niger State APC Suspends Three Senators & Six House Of Rep Members

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger State has suspended all but four of its federal legislators over their failure to pay dues to the party, Channels Television is reporting. The state secretary of the party, Barrister Mohammed Liman, said three senators and six members of the House of Representatives are suspended because they have refused to pay their dues till date. H said only four out of the 13 legislators have been paying dues. “The constitution of our party is very clear on it, it says any member or political appointee that came into being through the platform of our party and fails to pay his dues is technically not a member of the party. “The constitution says you must pay your dues as and when due. This means technically they have suspended themselves,” he said. ‎He stated further; “‎Those we elected did not deem it fit to support the party financially, and how do they want the part to move on? “They have deliberately ...

Image
As Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom battles to ensure the return of sustainable peace in the war-torn Agatu communities of the state following invasion of the area by suspected Fulani insurgents, the invaders last Thursday extended their attack to nine villages in the homestead of former governor of the state, Dr. Gabriel Suswam, leaving at least 40 people dead. Many people are reported wounded, several houses as well as farmlands produce burnt to ashes, while hordes of other people are still missing just as the entire has been deserted. It was gathered that attempts by the Tiv villagers to drive the cows out...

Image
ABUJA— THE Senate, yesterday, asked President Muhammadu Buhari to intensify efforts to ensure the release of the over 200 Chibok schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram insurgents 690 days ago.
